Christmas Party Games!

Everything is in order. You've invited all the right friends and family members, you've worked tirelessly in the kitchen preparing your famous Christmas dinner and Christmas cookies, and you've wrapped all your presents within an inch of their lives. All that's left now is to sit back and enjoy spending time with your friends and family members... right?

Yes - but that might not be easy as it sounds! What if you've invited several friends who don't know each other very well? Or family members that aren't very communicative? What will you do to break the awkward silences that could occur?

Never fear! The team at Ornaments for Keeps is here to help you plan for just this type of disaster. We've compiled a list of our favorite Christmas party games to help you seamlessly smooth over any awkward moments before your guests even have a chance to realize it!

Christmas Carol Charades
Put a holiday spin on this classic party game! Play this game just like you play the classic charades game (players take turns silently acting out a secret word or phrase until someone guesses it), but with a holiday twist: you can only act out Christmas carols.

Build a Snowman
Did you know you can build snowmen indoors? Divide players into teams of 2-3 people. Give each team a roll of toilet paper, a carrot, and any other tools you think could be helpful. The teams will each turn one of their members into a snowman by wrapping them in toilet paper and decorating them as they see fit. Winners can be judged based on speed or decorative prowess.

Decorate The Christmas Tree
Can you guess where this is going? Play this game just like you play "Build a Snowman," but have the team members decorate one player as a Christmas tree instead!

Two Truths & A Lie
This is a classic ice breaker game, but you can add a Christmas spin to it! In the original version, players take turns telling two truths and one lie about themselves, and the other players have to guess which statement is the lie. Give this game some Christmas flair by having players tell two truths and one lie about the worst Christmas presents they ever received.

Candy Canes
Have you ever heard of the game "Spoons"? Play "Candy Canes" exactly the same way, but with candy canes instead of spoons. Here's a quick summary of the rules:
  • Goal: Get 4 of a kind and grab a candy cane!
  • Put one less candy cane than the number of people playing in the center of the table. For example: if you have 7 players, only use 6 candy canes.
  • Deal 4 cards to all the players.
  • Dealer places remaining deck of cards to his right.
  • Dealer draws a card from the deck and decides whether or not he wants to add it to his hand. If he does, he will choose a different card from his hand and discard it by passing it to the player on his left. If he does not, he will immediately pass it to the player on his left. Players can only have 4 cards in their hand at a time.
  • The player to the left of the dealer picks up the card the dealer just passed her and goes through the same decision and discard process.
  • When cards get passed all the way around to the player to the right of the dealer, they collect in a standing discard pile (the dealer continues drawing from the main deck).
  • Once a player gets four of a kind in his hand, he grabs a candy cane. At this point, all the other players can also grab candy canes (you do not have to have four of a kind to grab a candy cane after another player has done so).
  • The player who does not get a candy cane is either out or given a letter in the word of your choice (such as C-A-N-D-Y or C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S). Once players get enough letters to spell out the whole word, they are out.
  • The last remaining player wins!
Just like "Spoons", "Candy Canes" is much more fun when played very quickly. Ramp things up by requiring players to pass cards and grab candy canes at lightning speed!

Your guests will love these hilarious Christmas party games! How else do you plan to keep your guests entertained at your Christmas gatherings? We'd love to hear your ideas!

Don't forget that Christmas is less than five weeks away! If you're looking for a great last-minute gift idea, there's still time to order personalized Christmas ornaments! Give the gift that will keep on giving for years to come. Place your order today!

Start Your Ornament Tradition!

What does the word "tradition" mean to you?

Traditions can appear in the form physical objects, or they can manifest as verbal or behavioral rituals. They are passed down from generation to generation, both intentionally and unintentionally. Traditions play an integral role in our lives all year long, but they are especially prominent during the holiday season. With Thanksgiving only a few weeks away and Christmas not far behind, all of us at Ornaments for Keeps thought it would be appropriate to spend some time reflecting on some of the holiday traditions we've come to love - and give some ideas for fun new traditions!

You're Participating in Traditions

(And You Might Not Even Know it!)

Our entire culture has become so accustomed to certain traditions that we find ourselves participating in them without even realizing it! Hanging stockings by the fireplace and giving each other gifts, for example, are Christmas traditions that are observed by almost everyone in the United States. These traditions have become so ingrained in our minds that we do them without hardly even thinking about it.

What's Your Holiday Tradition?

Beyond these over-arching traditions observed by our culture as a whole, each family has its own unique holiday traditions. These traditions can be as elaborate as your imagination allows, or they can be as simple as watching "It's a Wonderful Life" on Christmas Day. Some families share a certain holiday meal every year, others read "The Night Before Christmas" every Christmas Eve, still others get personalized family Christmas ornaments every year... The opportunities for traditions are endless!

Every Tradition Has To Start Somewhere!

Some of these traditions date back longer than any of us can remember, but every tradition had to have started at some specific point in time. It's never too late to start your very own family Christmas tradition. If you're looking for a fun new tradition idea this year, consider ordering one of our Customized 2014 Family Christmas Ornaments! We design and decorate all of our personalized ornaments with the utmost care and precision in order to deliver you a wonderful start to an adorable holiday tradition.

If you have questions or another idea for a great holiday tradition, please let us know! Connect with us on Facebook (Ornaments for Keeps) or on Twitter (@ornaments4keeps). We'd love to hear from you!

What Type of Christmas Spirit Are You?

Christmas is a time for celebrating, for looking back on another great year, and for spending quality time with our beloved family and friends. As our lives get busier and busier, the time Christmas helps us set aside for our families becomes more and more valuable.

In addition to the time dedicated to family and friends, Christmas promises us something else - something whimsical, something magical, something we know and love as "Christmas Spirit."

Christmas Spirit manifests itself in all of us, in the ways we prepare for and celebrate each Christmas season, and comes in three main forms. Which of these resonates with you the most?

ECSTATIC

These people are the easiest to spot. They're the ones who practically squeal every time someone even whispers the word "Christmas." We all know these people... In fact, all of us at Ornaments for Keeps are probably more ecstatic about Christmas than a lot of people we know! (Of course, you kind of have to be to work at the best personalized ornament shop in the Midwest.)
You might be "ecstatic" if...
  • Your countdown to Christmas begins in July - if not earlier.
  • You begin shopping for Christmas decorations before it's even Halloween.
  • Your least favorite day of the year is December 26th, because that's the farthest away from Christmas next year.
  • You buy your family a brand-new customized Christmas ornament every year.

INDIFFERENT

People with "indifferent" Christmas Spirit are sometimes the hardest to spot; their casual indifference allows them to blend in to almost any setting. Personally, we can't understand how someone could be indifferent to Christmas, but we know these people exist!
You might be "indifferent" if...
  • You begin Christmas shopping in the beginning of December.
  • You'll go to a Christmas party if you're invited, but you never plan one yourself.
  • You put up just enough Christmas decorations to keep the neighborhood kids happy.

BEGRUDGING

Yes, even Scrooge has a form of Christmas Spirit! We like to call this form "begrudging" because, like it or not, these people still participate in Christmas to some extent. They can't walk into any store without hearing Christmas music played over the radio or drive down the street without seeing at least a few twinkle lights. Whether they like it or not, Christmas is unavoidable!
You might be "begrudging" if...
  • You want to lock yourself in your room the first time you hear Christmas music.
  • The Grinch is your hero.
  • You save your Christmas shopping 'til just a few days before Christmas - if you even go at all.
What do you think? Which form of Christmas Spirit are you? (Hint: If you're reading this... You're definitely NOT "begrudging"!)

Is There An Elf On Your Shelf?

Once upon a time, a long time ago, Santa Claus sat in his workshop at the North Pole, thinking. He knew he needed to get presents to all the good little boys and girls across the world, but how would he know who had been good that year? One day, he had a wonderful idea. He gathered his elves around him and delivered an important message. He was going to send each of them to a home with young children, where they would live from Thanksgiving until Christmas Eve. Each night, the elves were to travel back to the North Pole and tell Santa everything the children had done that day and if they had been good. Each morning, the elves would arrive back at the house before the children awoke so they could hide in a different place. The children would excitedly seek them out once they awoke, so they could whisper their Christmas wishes to the elves.
So goes the story of a delightful children's book, written by a woman named Carol Aebersold and her daughter, Chanda Bell. Since its publication in 2005, The Elf on the Shelf has won multiple awards and inspired many families around the world to begin their own Elf on the Shelf Christmas traditions.

The Elf on the Shelf has become a wonderful source of inspiration for all of us at Ornaments for Keeps. We fell in love with the story the first time we heard it, and we have loved getting to participate in this adorable family tradition through the creation of our personalized elf ornaments

This year, we invite you and your family to join in the fun! Our customized elf Christmas ornaments make the perfect elves for your children to search the house for every morning. Though we live in an increasingly digital world, we don't want the next generation to grow up without the same sense of imagination and wonder that filled our hearts when we were young. It's through fanciful traditions like these that we help keep our children's imaginations alive.

We hope you'll start a new family tradition this year by inviting the elves into your home, and we would be honored to get to be a part of it. If you're looking for some more creative ideas, check out our Elf on a Shelf Pinterest board!

Stocking Stuffer Ideas!

The search for the perfect Christmas gifts - no one is exempt from this ever-present holiday task! Christmas gifts come in two forms: the ones that are wrapped and placed beneath the tree and the ones that are tucked securely into Christmas stockings. Some people think these so-called "stocking stuffers" are the hardest gifts to find, so the team at Ornaments for Keeps put their heads together to help you come up with some easy, affordable stocking stuffers that your whole family is sure to love!

Portable Mini-Speakers
In today's increasingly digital world, most people bring their music with them wherever they go. Portable speakers that can tuck into a glove box or purse can be a great way gift for the music lovers in your family!

Texting Gloves
Along the same note, texting gloves are a great gift to get for the avid texters and device afficionados in your family - especially people who have to spend lots of time outside for work or school.

Goofy Band-Aids
For the kid in all of us, you can't go wrong with silly Band-Aids! Unfortunately, scrapes and scratches are an everyday part of life, but you can help lighten the mood with a fun Band-Aid.

Tea Infusers
These days, you can find tea infusers in the shape of just about anything! Help the tea-lovers in your family gear up for the cold months ahead with a tea infuser that perfectly matches their unique lives and personalities.

Chocolate
No further explanation is needed, because - let's be honest - you can never go wrong with chocolate.

Season Passes
Give the gift that keeps on giving! If you live near a water or amusement park, season passes can be a great way to thrill your family and friends all year long.

Personalized Playing Cards
Playing cards are always great gifts... but personalized playing cards are even better! Cards with names, pictures, or special quotes on the back can be more than just game fodder; they can become treasured family keepsakes.

Customized Christmas Ornaments
Each of the times we've listed so far will make great stocking stuffers, but we're (obviously) a little biased towards this last category! Personalized Christmas ornaments serve as wonderful gifts because they celebrate the season in a way that is truly unique. Whether you're looking for an ornament to commemorate a specific event or to celebrate the whole family, we promise to make you the best Christmas ornaments in the country!

Christmas Card Traditions

Christmas cards have become a wonderful tradition in many families across the United States. These annual cards are a great way to reach out to distant family and friends over the holiday season. Many people like to add a personal touch to their annual greeting cards by including pictures of their immediate family, so distant friends and relatives can see how everyone has grown and changed over the last year - and the Ornaments for Keeps family is no exception!

Linda Henderson, the driving force behind our custom Christmas ornaments business, began designing yearly Christmas cards in 1980 after her first daughter was born in 1979 (on Christmas Day, no less!). She has kept copies of her Christmas cards every year, and looking back on them always brings a smile to everyone's faces.

Some of Linda's favorite Christmas cards from past years!

The Christmas card tradition began decades and decades ago. Linda's mom actually sent her very first Christmas card in 1954! It's amazing to see how the cards have grown and evolved since then.

It's definitely not too soon to start planning your 2014 Christmas cards; choosing the perfect photograph(s) to include in the greeting can take more time than you might think! What are are you planning on doing for your 2014 Christmas cards? Send us your pictures... We'd love to see what you have in mind!

Meet "Mompreneur" Linda Henderson!

Behind every successful business is a dreamer, someone who goes above and beyond to help the business succeed. Someone who, regardless of the twists and turns they're faced with, continuously breathes life into their business. For Ornaments for Keeps, that person is the one and only Linda Henderson! Linda is the true embodiment of Christmas spirit, and we're lucky to have her as the driving force behind Ornaments for Keeps! We hope you'll enjoy this opportunity to get to know her as much as she enjoys designing customized Christmas ornaments for you.

What was your inspiration behind Ornaments for Keeps?
Ornaments for Keeps was started as a "mompreneur" business so I could be a stay-at-home mom with my kids and also be creative. I have always had a love for personalized Christmas ornaments of my own, so this was a perfect fit! I enjoy helping my customers create wonderful memories and traditions with my ornaments.

How long have you lived in Jefferson City, Missouri?
In 1981, we moved to Jefferson City to follow my husband's job. We were only supposed to be here for a couple of years, but we loved the beautiful, scenic Capitol City and the smaller town feel. We decided it would be a great place to raise a family.

Where did you go to school?
I was born and raised in Troy, Missouri. After high school, I attended Hannibal LaGrange College and received my Associate of Arts degree in Business. I continued my education at Columbia College, where I studied business with an emphasis in accounting. After my children were in school, I worked for Missouri Department of Transportation and continued to run Ornaments for Keeps. In 2010, I retired from MoDot and was able to devote all of my time to my business again. I enjoy getting up every day and doing what I LOVE!

Who is your family? Do you have any pets?
I would like to introduce you to my husband, Keith. In 2004, he retired from the Army after 26 years in the service. He is a great supporter of my business! He wears many hats - cookie cutter maker, head of sales, head of shipping, and -sometimes - even assistant ornament painter! Our daughter Kim joined the business in 2011 and has also been a wonderful addition. She helps create the ornaments, works with our social media, and handles the website. Fun fact: Kim was born on Christmas Day; how funny is it that she now works in a Christmas business? Our other daughter, Kayla, has four children who keep her very busy, but we hope she will join the business soon. The four grandchildren are the light of our lives. We love spending time with them and attending all of their sporting events. We also have two granddogs that we love to watch!

What is your favorite holiday tradition?
I have many favorite traditions. Making homemade caramels, making and decorating sugar cookies, setting up the toy train around the Christmas tree with my grandchildren, going to church on Christmas Eve, having Christmas dinner with my family... I could go on and on!

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I love spending time at our small lake home. Being on the water is so peaceful and relaxing. I also love spending time with my children and grandchildren, and I love reading a good book. Call me old-fashioned, but I still like to feel the pages of a good book going through my fingers!

What is your dream vacation destination?
I love to travel and explore new places. After the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, we cross one place off of our bucket list. My list is long - and normally involves a beautiful beach!

What is your favorite part about your job?
I love the actual process of creating an ornament - feeling of the bread dough in my hands, letting my mind and hands go, and seeing what forms. I also love going to a show and hearing people's reactions to my work. It's very satisfying!

What is the number one item on your Christmas list this year?
At my age, I have all the things I need. I just pray for health and happiness for my family!

Four Fantastic Family Christmas Traditions!

Christmas traditions are some of the best parts of the holiday season. We love watching traditions evolve and grow along with the families that create them and pass them on to the next generation! As this year's holidays quickly approach, we thought we'd help you prepare for another wonderful season with some of these great family Christmas traditions!

Christmas Cookies
If there's one thing we can all agree on, it's how much we love Christmas cookies. There's something wonderfully special about baking a bunch of Christmas cookies and spending a few hours decorating them with your family. Using red, green, and white icing (along with red hots and sprinkles), your cookies can really come to life!

Christmas Bucket
This is a new one to all of us at Ornaments for Keeps! With this adorable family tradition, kiddos get a bucket of small packages on December 1st. Every day, they get to unwrap a little present that holds another activity, one for every day until Christmas. The activities can range from writing letters to Santa, cruising around and admiring neighborhood Christmas lights, making homemade bread dough ornaments, and anything else you can imagine!

Gift Giving
Christmas is the season for giving. Encourage your kiddos to get in on the fun by planning a week or ten days of small thoughtful, giving activities that they can help you with. Bake cookies for your mail carrier, write a thank you note to their teacher, etc. Let your kids help brainstorm ways to give to others!

Personalized Christmas Ornaments
We all have our personal favorites when it comes to holiday traditions, and it should come as no surprise that ours are personalized Christmas ornaments! Don't fool yourselves into thinking that our beautiful handmade ornaments only serve as one-time gifts; getting a new customized Christmas ornament with your name and the year can be a great way to watch the years go by.

The holidays will be here before we know it. It's definitely not too soon to start planning your holiday traditions! How do you plan on celebrating with your family?
