A Bonaire Affair

I just returned from a great week in Bonaire.  What a wonderful island to soak up the sun, feel the island breeze and get re-energized.

Always when I travel, I look for unique handmade crafts and DIY ideas.  Shopping in the heart of Bonaire was so fun, palm trees gently blowing and the many colors of the buildings looked so tropical.  Browsing the shops I found a unique, whimsical store, The Bonaire Affair.  A mother and daughter own this store and they travel the world looking for handmade gifts to offer in their store.  I found painting and word art on driftwood, whimsical clocks made out of driftwood, hand-beaded belts, washers made into geckos, handmade Christmas ornaments reflecting the beach and all personalized with Bonaire and wonderful handmade jewelry.  This is truly a place to visit if you are ever in Bonaire.

The cruise ships were in port the day we were shopping so the outdoor vendors were set-up too.  These were not typical tourist traps, they were quality craftsmen with handmade jewelry, canvas, driftwood and clay art.  A couple of wonderful finds for me were the Flaming Flamingo hot sauces and seasonings handmade in Bonaire.  After tasting I chose the BBQ Dry Rub-Tropical Chipotle and the Caribbean Flame Hot Sauce.  Yum!  I look forward to serving these.

My last find I purchased 2 bracelets that were handmade out of recycled bicycle tires with beads added.  I knew my daughters would love these.

As I return to the remaining months of winter, I’m inspired to create some tropical ornaments from clay and possibly try some word art on barn wood.  What are your DIY projects you are working on these winter months?  I would love to hear about them!
