The History of Salt Dough Ornaments

The art of the salt dough making is an ancient one, dating back to Egyptian times. In Europe, mainly Germany, this craft became very popular. The art was used widely in home decoration, especially at festive times, much like today.

When immigrants started moving to the United States from Germany, a common place they located to was Pennsylvania. They were known as the Pennsylvania Dutch and created ornaments out of salt dough, wood, glass, fabric, metal and many other materials.

In the late 1970's personalized salt dough ornaments became sought after across the country. 1981 was the year I started my venture making salt dough ornaments but at this time the ornaments had a more primitive look. Here are a few of my first creations. Quite different, right?!

In the beginning, I sealed the ornaments with polyurethane which eventually yellowed over time. Later in the 80's I switched to an epoxy finish. It is a hardener and resin mixed together and gives them a clear, high gloss shine and discoloration is minimal.

Over the years products and methods have greatly improved turning this craft into beautiful pieces of art. We are constantly developing new, modern designs to keep up with the trending times.

I've included the recipe for the dough so you too can try your hand at making your very own ornaments to treasure!

Salt Dough Recipe:

1C. Flour
1/4C. Salt
1/2C. Warm Water

Instructions:

1. Add salt and flour to bowl, gradually add warm water.
2. Mix together until dough forms. If it is sticky, roll in some loose flour and kneed.
3. Roll onto cutting board and use cookie cutters to form desired shapes.
4. Bake at 220 degree for 5 hours or until hard.
5. Paint and decorate with acrylic paints and glitter.
6 Spray with a clear sealer to protect.

Stuffin' the Stockings

Buying Christmas presents can be a fun yet daunting experience...will they like it, will they want to exchange it, is it something they can really use? So after you find just the right gift, you guessed it, time to start thinking about the stocking stuffers. What?? To help you out I've gone in search of a few of the most sought after tiny gifts that fit in that giant sock.

     1. CANDY! Who doesn't love all of that sugary goodness that can cause you to feel like you want to run a marathon until you get down the road and decide maybe a nap would be good too. Yes I know, sugar is horrible for you but surely having a treat once a year won't hurt, right? Well then there's Halloween, Valentine's Day, and Easter too but who's counting, it makes a geart stuffer!
     2. THE SELFIE STICK. With the world of social media, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the fifty others I didn't mention, we all want that perfect selfie. This portable wonder stick makes it super easy to get just that.
     3. SLIPPER SOCKS, HATS, SCARVES AND MITTENS. Christmas is at the end of December, I think this gift is self-explanatory.
    4. LOTTERY TICKETS. This little game of luck is so fun! I tend to only win a lottery ticket or a few bucks but you never know, there's always that chance of hitting the jackpot!
     5. $10 GIFT CARD TO FAVORITE RESTAURANT. This amount will probably not cover the entire cost of the meal but every little bit helps and it might allow them to splurge on something they don't normally buy...like dessert.
     6. PERSONALIZED ORNAMENTS. Yes, these keepsakes from Ornaments for Keeps make wonderful gifts and just so happen to fit perfectly in a stocking. Something that can be kept and treasured forever and brought out every year to remember this special holiday.

While these only scratch the surface of the endless possibilities, hopefully this will help take some of the pressure off and let you enjoy your holidays that much more. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Gone Beachin'

Having a seasonal business, such as a Christmas ornament company, has allowed for us to do something else we love in the off-season…go to the beach! Although, just because we are on vacation doesn’t mean that our creative minds have also completely checked out.

One of our favorite things to do is scour the gift stores for inspiration.  Most of the time it’s the typical t-shirts, hats, and shot glasses (don’t get me wrong, those goodies are all wonderful to bring home) but occasionally we run across a gem like this, a driftwood Christmas tree! Who even thought of something so neat?!?

Having a driftwood tree to decorate with an ornament that we get on vacation would be so great to bring out at Christmas time! New ornaments to decorate this tree would also be something else fun to search for on all of our beach excursions.  Sand dollars and starfish make super cute souvenir ornaments as well.

There’s also the DIY ornament made from all the little treasures found on the beach. Take home a little sand and fill a glass ball ornament with all the shells and coral you collect. Use a paint pen, marker or a vinyl cutter to mark it with the beach and date.  We also embellished with twine and ribbon. Can’t wait to put this on the tree!

Ornamentsfor Keeps also has a huge selection of destination ornaments.  Each one can be personalized specially to commemorate the memories from your vacation.

Please contact us if adding more than one or two dishes to make sure that they will fit. Another option is to have your pets name added to the family ornament with a paw print next to their name on the stocking hat. There is also a section dedicated to our pets so yours may have their very own personalized ornament.

  •
    • There is a whole category dedicated to MU Fan ornaments, will you do other teams too?
So far we have been able to do every team that has been requested. Contact us to discuss which ornament you would like for your favorite team!
    • Can I pay with another form of payment other than PayPal.
Yes! When prompted, continue to the secure PayPal page. There is a place on the login screen that says “pay with credit, debit, or PayPal credit.” Click there and you may pay with another form of payment.
    • What is the difference between Bread Dough and Resin ornaments?
Bread dough ornaments and resin ornaments can look similar but are very different. Our bread dough ornaments are made with love by us in the USA. They are hand molded and sometimes cut from a cookie cutter, we hand paint and then embellish.

The resin ornaments are made from a mold. Many of our resin ornaments came from the original ornament we created. A resin material is poured into the mold and they are hand painted.

If you pick up both ornaments and turn them over you will see the resin ornament is flat and smooth and the bread dough ornament will be detailed. For more questions on our process please ask.

Passing Down My Passion for Christmas

My daughter, Kimberly, joined me in my personalized ornament business 3 years ago. This is the mompreneur business I started right after she was born so I could be a stay-at-home mom. I am so proud that she has designed her first ornament in 2014 that was picked up by the company that I design for to be sold in stores and catalogs around the world.

It is a whimsical, happy snowman popping out of a Christmas package. The package was embossed in red with the addition of the Christmas green bow along with the lime green scarf and mittens. This ornament will be a delight for anyone who receives one. Personalize with their name and date and you've made a memory!

Kim was born on Christmas Day, which is fitting that she was made to be in the business of Christmas. Early on she was coloring, painting and playing with playdough all through the day. She would get her playdough along with her own cookie sheet and make her ornaments just like me...this was soooo cute!

A picture of Kim and her sister, Kayla, making ornaments a very long time ago!

It is truly a dream that I can work with my daughter and pass the creative trade on to her. We are both dedicated to "making memories one ornament at a time!"

Celebrate the Graduate with a Personalized Ornament

The month of May can mean so much for so many. The little tike that has graduated pre-school into Kindergarten launching their school career. How cute they are at that age! The high schooler that has finished their journey of growth into adulthood and then there are the college graduates that now get to begin their life in the direction their dreams have lead. There were the early mornings, all the homework, the late nights at the library, the plays and awards ceremonies, and all of the other traditions leading to the academic graduation. What a whirlwind it has been! That special person in your life deserves something personal to commemorate this great occasion.

I still have my graduation ornament from 1998 that I bring out every year to treasure on my Christmas tree. It reminds me of all the hard work and dedication it took to earn that diploma.

We have many options to choose from for your graduate...

Do you have a specific school or year you would like your ornament to be customized to?

It’s a gift to be cherished forever!
