The Mischievous Elf on the Shelf

The Elf on the Shelf tradition is based on a children's book written by Carol Aebersold and Chandra Bell to explain how Santa knows who's naughty and nice.
The story describes how "scout elves" hide in people's homes and watch over the daily events. When the family has gone to bed, the scout elf flies back to the North Pole to report to Santa the activities, good and bad, that have taken place throughout the day. Before the family wakes each morning, the scout elf flies back from the North Pole and hides. By hiding in a new spot each morning, the scout elf plays an ongoing game of hide and seek.
Scout elves get their magic by being named and loved by a child. There's only one rule you must follow and that is not to touch the elf as the magic will disappear and Santa won't hear all that was seen. Although it can't be touched, they may speak to the scout elf and tell all of their Christmas wishes so that the elf can report back to Santa accurately.
Since the elf moves daily from Thanksgiving until Christmas, parents have found some creative ways to make him hide. My long-time friend, Mandy Engelbrecht, has to be one of the most creative Elf on the Shelf masters I've ever seen. Her pictures of their mischievous elf named Chippy are featured in this blog. Even after a long day of "momming" where I'm sure she would just like to go to bed, she always comes up with a fun way for her kids to wake up and find Chippy waiting. What an awesome tradition her kids will remember always!

The Tradition of a Christmas Ornament a Year

Our family has A LOT of personalized ornaments on our tree, each with their own story and memory. It only took one to start the trend. There are the pine cones my sister and I found in the yard and drug inside to cover with glitter (making an absolute horrid mess), the Angels made from dry noodles that we made in Bible school and of course, the personalized ornaments we got each year to highlight the activities and interests like volleyball and ice skating all the way up to graduation. Ornaments will quickly become a treasured part of your holiday tradition.
Once your children have left the nest and have their own first Christmas tree, give them their collection of ornaments accumulated through the years so that they can bring them out every Christmas to cherish their childhood memories. Once their life takes direction they'll be able to keep the tradition alive by adding new ornaments for each milestone throughout their life and maybe one day, they'll be starting a tradition for a little one of their own.
The different types of ornaments are endless just make sure the meaning behind it can be adored forever!

Gifting Outside the Box

Weddings happen all year long but it seems as though June is the busiest. If you think about it, buying a wedding gift is quite the honor. It means you’ve been specially chosen to share in one of the most important days in a couples’ life.  The marriage will hopefully last a lifetime and you want a special gift that will let them remember it forever, however, coming up with that gift can be a challenge.

The gift registries that are so popular can be a wonderful thing because then you know exactly what is asked for, but if you’re like me, a water purifier or a set of kitchen utensils isn’t exactly how I want to say “congratulations on beginning your life together.” I like to show the couple that I have put extra thought and care into their gift.  A monogrammed item, like a serving platter, is always a hit. Wall décor with a bible verse is my personal favorite or you can have a present hand tailored with their last name and established date.

The list is endless but I’m sure whatever you choose will stay in the hearts of the couple forever.  And of course, what would a gift be without being accompanied by a personalized ornament from Ornaments for Keeps? Weather you decide to give a card with the ornament attached to the envelope or hand tied to the package, your gift will show uniqueness with its personalized  touch  and will definitely stand out above the other packages on the gift table(which is what I strive for…presentation first:).

The Vintage Wedding Car is not only our most popular wedding ornament but our most popular ornament sold.
Each year they will be able to bring their own ornament out to proudly display and to remember “their day.”  We have a wide selection so browse through and pick the perfect one from your heart to theirs!  Just to make this even more fun, use code LOVE10 for 10% off your order today through June 12th.

Where Ornaments Are Made

Finally, our crafting paradise is complete! This wonderful idea ended up taking a little longer than what was expected but really, doesn’t any home project? Going from a cold and drab unfinished basement to a warm and inviting space to let our creativity flow was totally worth the wait! I wanted to highlight some of our favorite features that made this room come together.

I first want to emphasize the importance of having storage, storage and more storage. We’re about three items away from being able to open up our own Hobby Lobby! As you can see, the room is centered around a huge 5’x9’ table that we skirted with black fabric to hide all of the goodies that lurk below. On both sides of this table we have cabinets that give us more storage and more workspace.

Adding the green bins on the inside makes it even more appealing when these cabinets have to be opened.

The shelves between the windows have been amazing! Keeping all of our paints, glitters, glues, and ribbons organized is a necessity.

Credit has to be given to my sister-in-law, Kathy Shramek, for the one-of-a-kind window treatments. She took four to five yards of six different fabrics, tore them into pieces and tied them onto laundry clothes-line…what an idea that turned out fabulous!

Of course we have the racks that display all of the ornaments and last but not least there is the mailing and printer station. This has come in so handy. Having all of our mailing boxes, taping supplies and a place to print the mailing labels is a must have to make the Christmas season run as efficiently as possible.

This sign above the cabinet says it all…”Do what you Love!”

We’d love to hear your feedback on our new space where ornaments are made and also to see your pictures of your creative workspace!

Personalize Your Family's Elf on the Shelf

The Christmas season is in full swing and we have a question for you...Is your Elf on the Shelf?

This is a tradition for many families world wide! Stemming from the popular 2005 book, The Elf on the Shelf watches and listens all day to what the kiddos are doing and saying.... Then at night he travels back to the North Pole to report to Santa.  Each morning, the Elf will return to the home in a different location throughout the home waiting to be discovered by the kids.

Like most traditions, you want to personalize them. What better way to personalize this fun Christmas tradition than with a morning delivery of personalized elf ornaments on your tree?   The Elf on the Shelf could be perched on your tree with a sign to look for the new ornaments that he has delivered to them!!  Or you could simply have them near the Elf on the Shelf and allow your children to put them on the tree.   Check out all my personalized Elf ornaments!!

This is just one idea for you to share with your loved ones. Traditions can be created so easily but can be cherished for a lifetime!

Happy crafting and I hope these ideas help!  Since my first craft show in 1981, customers here at home and from around the United States continue to add to their collections and to buy these personalized gifts for family and friends.

Personalized Family Ornament Options

Personalized family Christmas ornaments are a great way to chronicle your family year by year as it changes.  You can start the tradition anytime because it's never too late.

But you might want to start it sooner than later! You can look back over the years and fond memories will be sparked. You will see there are various options when it comes to customized family ornaments.  In addition to styles a number of different themes exist.

Whether your preference is a specific Christmas character or a sports theme we cover the gamete.  As family members are added over the years, you can adjust your ornament to accommodate it so they are included.

These also make great gifts.  Whether it is for a friend or family member this customized gift shows you were thinking of them in a special way.  You can also begin a collection for each family member as the years progress so they have the same mementos for their trees.

I hope these ideas help!  Since my first craft show in 1981, customers here at home and from around the United States continue to add to their collections and to buy these personalized gifts for family and friends.

How to Make Bread Dough Ornaments

Bread dough ornaments are an easy and affordable craft that everyone can do, and you can make them as simple or as complicated as you like.  I am going to show you how to make a simple but sophisticated bread dough ornament that I hope you will find inspiring.  I made these as table favors for Kingdom Christian Academy's banquet.  These could also be used as tie-ons for a gift, a Christmas ornament for your tree, a gift for a friend or as a Christmas ornament project for your children.  It is still amazing to me you can take the ingredients of flour, salt and water to make such cute and adorable handmade dough ornaments that can become keepsakes.

Supplies you will need:

flour, salt, measuring cups, 3-inch round cookie cutter, alphabet or word stamps, pattern stamp to emboss ornament (the one I used is an Inkadinkado stamp that came from Michaels), cutting board, rolling pin, cookie sheet lined with foil, ruler, ribbon, Delta Ceramcoat Sparkle Glaze and polyurethane spray.

Here is the recipe I use for bread dough ornaments:

1 c. flour
1/4 c. salt
1/2 c. warm water
colored powder tempera if desired (I added 4 T of white powder tempera that came from Hobby Lobby to make these ornaments)

Combine flour, salt and powder tempera.  Stir to mix.  Add water, usually I add part of the water, stir and add the rest if needed to make a ball.  Knead with flour till it is a soft ball that is not sticky but not to stiff.  Since I make lots of ornament dough, I use a food processor, which is an option.

Step 1

Cutting process - round circle

Lightly flour surface of cutting board, roll bread dough out to about 1/4 in..
Take stamp and lay on rolled out bread dough and emboss.
Take a round cookie cutter and place over embossed dough and cut out.
With your spatula move to a cookie sheet.
Continue embossing dough and cutting your ornaments till you have the desired number.  I could get 10 ornaments out of one batch of dough.

Cutting process - word

Lightly flour surface of cutting board, roll bread dough out to about 1/8 in.
Cut out pieces of dough to stamp word.  I used the word "believe" because it was the theme of the banquet.  The dimensions for that word is 1 1/2 in. by 5/8 in.  You could also use the word "joy", "peace", "love", "friend" or personalize with a name.  You will have to adjust your dimensions according to the size of your stamp.  You can find small word stamps or get small alphabet stamps to make your own word.
With your spatula move word pieces to lay on the circles you cut.  I placed at an angle but you can place as desired.

Step 2
Baking or drying

When I made these I started out baking at 210 degrees for 6 hours or until hard.  I don't know why, but sometimes a few of them might curl up slightly.  The next batch I let dry for 1 1/2 to 2 weeks.  I turned over after a week to dry on the back.  These remained perfectly flat.  If you have the time, I recommend letting them dry.

Step 3
Painting and finishing

After they are dried, I used Delta Ceramcoat Sparkle Glaze to paint on the ornaments.  On the word pieces, I took a liner brush and outlined the word.  I lined with bright pink or lime green for the colors of the banquet.

Spray with 2 coats of polyurethane spray front and back, letting dry between each coat.  This will seal the ornament.  After the ornaments have dried, I cut 8 in. pieces of sheer organza ribbon and made the hangers.

How to store bread dough ornaments

Store in a cool, dry place
Do not store in damp basement or attic
I store all my ornaments in Rubbermaid type containers on the main floor of my home.

See examples of bread dough ornaments I have made.  Happy crafting!
